Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1973 to 1977), he played at the defensive back (cornerback) position in the National Football League with the Houston Oilers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings. Born Joseph Phillip Blahak, he made his first impression on the football field at Scotus Central Catholic High School and continued his athletic excellence on the collegiate level at the University of Nebraska. While with the Cornhuskers, he contributed to two consecutive national championships (1970 and 1971) and will be forever remembered for producing a crucial block (allowing future Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers to return a punt for a 72-yard touchdown) which resulted in a 35 to 31 victory over Oklahoma in the contest which is now referred to as "The Game of the Century" played on November 25, 1971. Additionally, Blahak will be remembered for his contagious, relaxed persona which enabled his teammates to focus on the game at hand. Selected by the Oilers during the 8th round of the 1973 NFL Draft, he totaled 44 career regular season games. After retiring from football, he worked in the insurance industry.
