Henry Lee Borden was the oldest son of Gail Borden 1801-1874 and Penelope Mercer 1811-1844. As a boy he loved to hunt and fish near his home in southeastern Texas. He had six sisters and brothers; Mary 1829-1833, Morton Quinn 1834-1846, Philadelphia Wheeler Swift Johnson 1837-1880, Stephen Austin 1839-1844, Mary Jane Munsill 1841-1912 and John Gail 1844-1892.
Henry Lee's mother, Penelope, died of yellow fever in 1844. His father quickly re-married Azalea F. Stearns 1800-1857 in February 1845. Later his father married a third time to Emeline Eunice Eno Church 1808-1890.
Henry Lee first married Mary Jane Osburn 1838-1869 on 14Jun1855 in Wharton county. If they had children, there is no record.
Henry Lee served in the Confederate States Army from 13Mar1862-25May1865, designing and making weapons.
He second married "Jenny" Jane Janette Dawson 1844-?? on 22Oct1866. They had two children, William Clay 1868-1872 and Marietta 1870-1870. He third married on 03Mar1873 Laura Jane George Johnson 1844-1921 who had a son from her previous marriage, George Sidney Johnson 1865-??. They moved from Texas to Elgin, Illinois, where Henry Lee managed a milk condensing plant for his father. During this time his father, Gail, died and his youngest brother, John Gail, became the president of the condensed milk business. H.L. helped a shoemaker's daughter, named Nettie, with her singing career, taking her to New York, that resulted in Laura filing for divorce. John Gail's health failed and Henry Lee became the company president for a short time.
After his divorce, he married about 1886 a widow, Retta McConnelogue Buckley 1847-1927, and adopted her two sons, Gerald Mark 1871-1959 and Louis Lambert 1875-1926. Either or both of these sons may have attended De La Salle Christian Brothers about 1893. "On December 8, 1893, Henry was named "Brother Henry Borden AFC", Affiliated Member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in appreciation for his support of the De La Salle Christian Brothers of St. Louis, Missouri." Henry took a less active role in the milk business and spent more time at various residences. They had a place in St Clair, Michigan, where they had a steam yacht, named "Penelope," for sailing on the Great Lakes. They had a 600-acre cattle breeding farm near Tonti, Illinois. They stayed at their residences in Chicago and New York City and various others, including Houston, Texas. On a duck-hunting trip in California, they were staying at the Van Nuys Hotel, where Henry Lee died of a heart attack.
Arrangements were made by the family and his body was shipped by train to New York City, where he was buried near his father, mother and other family members at Woodlawn cemetery.
