According to a story in the Dubuque Telegraph Herald on Thursday, May 23, 1918, his body had been found floating in the Mississippi River near Third Street in Dubuque by a worker at the Molo Sand and Gravel Plant. He had been missing since the previous Wednesday when he had said he was going fishing for several days. His family had moved to Dubuque the previous fall, and his family believed he may have tried to jump a train to return to Manchester. However, it appeared he had fallen in the river and drowned while fishing.
