Scandinavian prince. He was a member of the House of Oldenburg, Prince of Denmark-Norway-Sweden, an area in this case called Dacia by the Church of Rome as its northernmost European province. He was also known as Jacobus and Iacobus Gottorpius, the latter epithet disclosing his connection to one of the Danish royal family's properties of Gottorp. He was a Franciscan missionary and left Denmark in 1536 because of the Protestant Reformation. He came to Mexico in 1542 after studying in Spain where King Charles V supported him. He had learned Spanish and Arabic and several other languages and eventually even excelled in local indigenous tongues. He worked hard for the rights of the people there and was very popular. The native people of Tarécuato still celebrate him annually and he has been a candidate to be canonized since 1996. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark visited his mission house on her state visit to Mexico in 2006.
