Major League Baseball Player. Born deaf, he spent nine seasons in the major leagues as a pitcher for the New York Giants and Cleveland Blues. He made his major league debut in 1900 at the age of 25, leading National League pitchers in appearances during his rookie season. He led the Giants to the National League pennant in 1904, followed by an appearance in the 1905 World Series. He appeared in 274 games during his career winning 116 games and losing 106. He ended his playing career with 21 shutouts and a combined 2.75 earned run average. Following his release from the Giants in 1908, he continued playing baseball in the minor leagues for several seasons, before eventually re-joining the Giants in 1940 as a professional scout. After a successful baseball career he joined the staff of the Illinois School for the Deaf, where he was involved in coaching football, baseball and girls basketball. He died following a heart attack at the age of 82.
