The story handed down in the family about my gr gr grpa John was that he'd gone off to fight in the Civil War, was killed and was buried in Arlington.

Later after I started working on my family tree I started looking for gr gr grpa.

The only John Richardsons in Arlington were either the wrong age or not from the area he would've enlisted from.
I ruled out that he is buried at Arlington.

Next I sent for the records of the very few men with the same name as him that were even close to matching gr grpa John.

The one and only record that I found that matched him close enough that I'm satisfied it's him showed that he was reported as A.W.O.L.

No other records exist for that person beyond that listing.

There's no way to know if he really did just take off and somewhere, start a new life, away from the family he left behind in the hills of Newton County, AR or if he could've been killed and his body never found or ID'd. So many of the men in the Civil War were listed as A.W.O.L. when really weren't, more appropriately maybe MIA instead.

Daddy was really disappointed to hear about what I'd found but he knew that I stuck with the facts when it came to info for the family tree.

So gr gr grpa John, whatever happened to you, where ever your body now lies, rest in peace.
