A Sacramento County jury found Manuel Babbitt guilty of first degree murder with special circumstances, due to mental illness and PTSD caused while serving our country. He was sentenced to death on July 6, 1982.

In March 1998, while serving time on death row, Babbitt was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received in the Vietnam War 30 years previously.

His execution was set for 12:29 a.m., May 4, 1999 and he was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m.

Babbitt turned down a last meal fasting until his execution and asking that his $50 last meal provision be donated to homeless veterans.. He spent his last hours with family, friends and his attorneys.

Manuel Pina Babbitt’s last words were "I forgive all of you."
He was buried May 10th 1999.
