Robert Dale “Bob” Cunningham died May 19, 2016, at Quality Hospice Care in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Bob was born April 25, 1929, in Earlsboro, Oklahoma, the youngest child of Johnnie Marvin Cunningham and Mary Eunice McBurnett Cunningham. While growing up in Earlsboro and the Seminole area, he was known by the name of “Rusty” Cunningham because he loved playing outside and, as a result, was always covered with the Oklahoma red dirt. He loved his years playing basketball at Varnum High School near Seminole and was recognized for his amazing singing voice.
In January 1948, Bob joined the Oklahoma 45th National Guard. He enjoyed his time in the 45th and deployed to Okinawa in 1950. He served in the Guard until December 1951. A few months later, in March 1952, he joined the young United States Air Force, which was less than 5 years old at the time. He went on to serve an additional 22 years in the Air Force with deployments to Okinawa and Vietnam and assignments in Texas, Florida, Mississippi and Oklahoma. He was proud of his service to our country.
On October 11, 1952, Bob married Ruth Ann Brannon of Enid, Oklahoma. Ruth preceded him in death on May 22, 2015. During their 61 year marriage, they were the loving parents of daughters Mary Faustermann and Barbara Kidder and son Jerry Dale Cunningham, who preceded them in death.
Following his service in the Air Force, Bob worked for the United States Post Office from 1974 to 1988 when he was medically retired due to a stroke. However, Bob didn’t let the stroke hold him back. He enjoyed bowling and went on to teach himself to bowl with his left hand. Bob and Ruth loved traveling around the country while Bob participated in bowling tournaments. The highlight of his bowling years was in 1986 when he bowled a perfect 300 game. Bob was active in bowling leagues throughout the Oklahoma City area from 1973 to 2014.
In addition to his wife and son, Bob was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Bob is survived by daughters Mary (Darrin) Faustermann and Barbara (Michael) Kidder, grandchildren Jeremy Howard, Steven Kidder, Eric Howard, and 4 great-grandchildren. Bob also leaves behind Rugena (Winford) Lemons, Renee Jones and Thomas Lemons.
A short graveside service with military honors was held at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, 2301 E. Indian Hills, Norman, on May 21, 2016.
