US Congressman. From 1832 to 1846 he was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives and served in the State Senate, 1847 and 1848. He was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress and served one term, 1849 to 1851. Butler was appointed Connecticut judge of the Superior Court in 1855, associate justice of the State Supreme Court in 1861 and Chief Justice of the same court in 1870.
