OBITUARY, Paterson Daily Press, 2/3/1912.

MRS. MARY J. BUTLER.

A very large circle of friends in this and other cities will be profoundly grieved to hear that Mrs. Mary J. Butler, widow of the late Henry L. Butler, died shortly after noon today at the family residence, 175 Hamilton Avenue, after a long and painful illness.

Mrs. Butler was a woman of rare character in intellect and personal charm, and her loss will be severely felt not only in her large and interesting family, but in her church and in the social circles of Paterson and New York. She was the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Nicholas Murray, a famous divine and writer on theological subjects, who was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church at Elizabeth, NJ. from 1834 to 1861. Her husband, Henry L. Butler, is well remembered as one of Paterson's most prominent citizens for many years. Mrs. Butler was the mother of Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, the distinguished president of Columbia University, and her other children are Henry M., of this city, William C. of Everett, Washington, Miss Eliza R. Butler, who resided with her mother, and Mary, the wife of Walter R. Mahoney of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. Mrs. Butler also leaves a brother, Mr. Nicholas Murray, and sister, Miss Rosa Murray, both of whom reside with her. She also left several grandchildren.

Mrs. Butler had for many years been a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, following the late Rev. Dr. David Magie when he left the old "First Church" of this city to found the new Church of the Redeemer on Broadway, and remaining an active worker in that communion until incapacitated by her illness. The funeral services will be held at that church on Tuesday afternoon next at 2:30 o'clock.

NOTE: Elizabeth Jones (Murray) Butler was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey when that city was originally located in Essex County. Years later, when the counties were modified, Elizabeth, New Jersey became part of Union County where the city is still incorporated. For the sake of historical accuracy, it is noted since the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey will appear under the heading of Union County because of its current location.
