Dr. Stanton Eugene Schmutz Sr., 88, passed away May 26, 2016, in Las Vegas, on his 68th wedding anniversary. Stanton was born May 20, 1928, in New Harmony, Utah, to Donald and Amber Schmutz, raised as a shepherd, attended High School in St. George, Utah, where he met Joyce Nielsen and served an LDS mission in the North Central States. Stanton and Joyce were sealed in the St. George LDS Temple. Stanton worked several years as an algebra teacher at Las Vegas High School, before attending dental school in St. Louis, and built a successful dental practice in Las Vegas for over 30 years. Stanton served faithfully as bishop of the Las Vegas 17th Ward as well as in many other church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Stanton was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; and son, Stanton Eugene Jr. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Bobi (John) Peterson; daughters, Jolene Schmutz, Sherri Archibald and Michelle (Brent) Larkin; and his son, Chris (Kim) Schmutz. Stanton and Joyce have 15 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 2. Visitation again starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, with service following at 10 a.m., all at Town Center LDS Chapel, 10550 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89144. Burial following at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, Garden of Moroni, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.
