Gottfried Friedrich Michaelis was born in Halbersdorf, West Prussia (now Kleczewo, Poland), near Riesenburg (now Prabuty, Poland). He studied at the Humboldt-Universität - Economics (Institut für Wirtschaftstheorie) in Berlin, Germany - Gottfried Michaelis owned a retail, haberdashery, and furrier company in Berlin, Riesenburg, and Chicago. Gottfried immigrated with his wife, Louise Brandt in 1884. Three of his children immigrated and settled in Chicago, Illinois, and two daughters raised families in Essex County, New Jersey. Gottfried's younger brother Christian Michaelis is also buried at Oak Woods Cemetery. One son, Gustav Michaelis, who died on 12 August 1912 in Neudörfchen, Westpreussen (now Nowa Wioska, Poland) did not immigrate.
