Margaret O'Brien was born in Whitechapel, London, England, in 1848. Her father was Irish. She and her husband, George, had about 13 children together. When they were living in England, she worked as a maker of umbrellas. They gradually moved across England, to Birmingham and then Manchester, and finally in 1884, they immigrated to America. They were originally going to Canada where they were supposedly getting some kind of homesteading property to farm, but they took a side trip down into Maine and fell in love with the USA. They at least one son, Frederick, in Maine, and then finally moved to Boston, where they spent the rest of their lives. According to my grandmother, she smoked a pipe! Margaret and her husband George were hardworking people who had a lot of ambition and worked hard for their many children. They are said to have done amateur theatricals- as singers.
