David G. Marker, 78

HOLDEN - David George Marker, 78, of Holden, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Philadelphia at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

He leaves his two children, Paul Marker and his wife Lara Collier of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, and Elizabeth Patin and her husband Kenneth of Sand Lake, Michigan; two grandchildren, Jordan and Sydney Marker; his former wife Cynthia Thomas; a brother, Harry Marker; and a close friend Richard Lewis of Wales, United Kingdom.

David was born in Atlantic, Iowa, son of Calburt David and Vera Susan (Smith) Marker. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Physics and Mathematics from Grinnell College in Iowa graduating Phi Beta Kappa, a Master's Degree and a Doctorate in Physics from The Pennsylvania State University. He also received honorary degrees from Hope College in Michigan and Grinnell College.

David was a member of the faculty of Hope College for twenty years, the last ten of which he served as the school's Provost. He was then President of Cornell College and Des Moines University, both in Iowa. He then served as vice president, president, and provost on an interim basis at institutions such as Morningside College, Chaminade University of Hawaii, Maryville University of St. Louis, Pacific Oaks College, St. Gregory's University and the University of West Florida. He was Vice President for Academic Affairs at Assumption College from 2004 to 2007. He belonged to numerous academic organizations. He was a consummate professional, and above all else a gentleman who was always kind and receptive. He retired in December.

In his personal time, David enjoyed listening to classical music, reading mysteries, eating good meals and being in the company of and sharing conversation with family and friends.

A funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 6, at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester. The burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at pennmedicine.org.

The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester is directing arrangements.
