Samuel Morse was born in 1585. Source: Representative men and old families of southeastern Massachusetts.

Death, Dedham, Jan 1655; married Redgrave, Suffolk, England, 29 Jun 1602 Elizabeth Jasper (NEHGR 83-81). Children: Samuel, Elizabeth, John, Daniel, Joseph, Sarah and Mary. His will is dated 2 Dec 1654 and probated 30 Jan 1655. Source: The Great Migration, Vol. V, p. 170-173

"For many years the question of the ancestry of Samuel Morse of Dedham, whose descendants are numerous, has puzzled New England genealogists. It is with pleasure therefore, that the Committee on English and Foreign Research presents English Records and a pedigree based on them which show very conclusively the ancestry of Samuel Morse and the parentage of his wife Elizabeth.

They settled first in Watertown, MA where they "became comfortable to the orders and discipline and doctrines too of the Puritan Church to the joy which was doubtless their motive for emigrating. Representative men and old families of southeastern Massachusetts". 1912. Vol III page 1774

By 18 Aug 1636, Samuel resided in Dedham. He made his will 02 Dec 1654, leaving all his estate, amounting in value to one hundred and twenty-four pounds and seven shillings, to his wife, Elizabeth, it to be divided after her death among his surviving children." Family Monument erected by Morse Family Descendants in 1858.

Note: The monument pictured was created in the 19th century. According to new research documented in "English Origins of New England Families" by Gary Boyd Roberts, Vol. II, p. 281-2, shows that Samuel was baptized 12 June 1576 in Boxted, Essex, England, son of Thomas and Margaret (King) Morse.

There is still some doubt by descendants and family genealogists as to Samuel's birth year. Some sources say 1585, some 1576. The confusion lies in the fact that there were three Samuel Morse's living in the same area at the same time.
