Industrialist, Philanthropist. He was the co-founder of the industrial chemical and polymer company Union Carbide. Born in Massachusetts, he graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in 1876 with a civil engineering degree. He began his career as a gas engineer, then worked for the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company starting in 1883. Here he met the company president's son, Cornelius Kingsley Garrison Billings. Knapp became president of the firm in 1893. The pair co-founded Union Carbide in 1894, with Knapp serving as president and CEO of the company from 1903 to 1925. He oversaw the merger of Union Carbide with the National Carbon Company in 1917, creating the industrial entity that exists today. Knapp retired from Union Carbide in 1933, and passed away at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California at the age of 78 in 1945.
