Born in Leeds, the son of John Wright Carr, Father Edwin Joseph Carr's parents were converts to the Catholic Faith. From an early age he showed signs of a vocation to the priesthood and studied at Ushaw and St. Joseph's Seminary, Leeds. After his ordination he was appointed assistant priest to Canon Simpson at St. Mary's, Bradford, and after two or three years became parish priest of St. Joseph's, Batley Carr, Dewsbury. There he spent the greater part of his priestly life and the church and well-equipped schools in that parish are a memorial to his zeal and devotion. His musical gifts made him an outstanding figure in the diocese, and he was always ready to put his abilities in this respect at the service of every good cause. In 1918 he was compelled to retire, owing to ill-health, and spent a great part of his remaining years abroad. He died at Montreux at the age of seventy-three and was buried on after a solemn requiem Mass at the parish church of Montreux. His body lies in the beautiful little cemetery at Clarens. As "The Tablet" put it in the issue on March 11, 1933, 'His many friends will remember him in their prayers, and perhaps as they pass through Switzerland some will pause on their way to visit his grave'. Be it so or not, we have added him here, hoping that at least, some might come across his memorial and remember him the same.
