GIG HARBOR, Wash. - LTC Jamie Dianne Bulken-Hoover, MD was born in Nurnberg, Germany on December 31, 1974. She passed away on July 13, 2016 at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington after a valiant battle against triple negative stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Jamie leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of seventeen years, Charles (Chip) Hampton Hoover, and their two beautiful daughters, Addison Riley Hoover (7) and Piper Emerson Hoover (3). Jamie is survived by her parents: LTC (Ret) James Daymont Bulken, DDS and Gail Knoth Bulken, her sisters: LTC (Ret) Wendy Susan Bulken and Cheryl Bulken Herbek and brother-in-law LTC (Ret) Charles Michael Herbek, nephews: MAJ Michael James Herbek, Charles Matthew Herbek, and her niece Laura Anne Herbek. Jamie graduated from Evans High School, Evans, GA. She entered the Army through ROTC from Tulane University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1997. Jamie earned honors as a distinguished graduate and was commissioned into the US Army Medical Service Corps as a Preventive Medicine Officer at Fort Riley, KS from 1997 - 2001. During her time as a MSC officer Jamie earned the Army's coveted Expert Field Medical Badge. From 2001 until 2005, Jamie attended medical school at The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Upon graduation, Jamie completed both her internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from 2005 until 2011. In 2012 she completed her hand surgery fellowship at The Curtis National Hand Center at Union Memorial Hospital and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. In 2013, Jamie completed her Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery. Jamie began her prestigious medical career at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at El Paso, TX where she was an Attending Orthopedic Hand Surgeon from 2012 until 2015 and also served as Clinic Chief. From February to June 2014, she deployed to Afghanistan and served as the Officer in Charge of the Forward Surgical Team, Forward Operating Base, Chapman, Khost Province. She was then transferred to Madigan Army Medical Center as an Attending Orthopedic Hand Surgeon. LTC Bulken-Hoover's military education includes the Officer Basic Course (Honor Graduate), Basic Industrial Hygiene Techniques Course (Honor Graduate), Principles of Military Preventive Medicine Course and Officer Career Course. LTC Bulken-Hoover sustained a record of excellence and honor throughout her military career, both as a Medical Service Corps and Medical Corps Officer. She was selected as the Medical Service Corps Junior Officer Week from the Office of the Surgeon General. LTC Bulken-Hoover was distinguished within the medical community with multiple scholarly activities such as publication in medical and peer-reviewed journals; clinical presentations and papers at professional society conferences; two research awards and membership in multiple professional and honorary societies. LTC Bulken-Hoover was an active member in the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons and was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. LTC Bulken-Hoover's awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), Army Superior Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Star), Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal (1 Bronze Star). Memorial services for Jamie took place at 1200 on July 19, 2016 at Madigan Army Medical Center. Additional services took place at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with final interment ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery. LTC Bulken-Hoover was a distinguished and well-regarded leader and physician in the Army Medical Department. She served her country with honor for over 19 years. However, more than that, she was a daughter, sister, mother and wife that lived life to the fullest and was a positive warm influence on all lives she touched.
