Hunter M. Breland PENNINGTON - Hunter M. Breland died at home after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. He was 73 years old. Hunter was born in Mobile, AL, the youngest of 11 children. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received a master's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from The University of Texas. He served in the Peace Corps in The Dominican Republic from 1961 to 1964. He received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and retired after a 30 year career as a research scientist at Educational Testing Service. He made major contributions to the research on assessing writing ability and on fairness in college admissions. He was named a Fellow of American Psychological Association. He also wrote and published two books on Breland family history, and was working on a third at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Dr. Nancy S. Breland, and two daughters and a son-in-law, Dr. Alison B. Breland and her husband Ashley Colvin, of Richmond, VA and Julia E. A. Breland, at home, and his dog, Nelly. He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Campbell of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Gloria Hughes of Mobile, AL. Final arrangements were private.
