Being by time of his death, a centenarian and thus, the oldest priest of the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Monsignor Charles J. Monaghan was born in Philadelphia to Charles and Mary Doherty Monaghan. A graduate of Northeast Catholic High School for boys, before entering Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, he was ordained on June 7, 1941 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul by Cardinal Dennis Dougherty. Named Honorary prelate to His Holiness Pope Paul VI on September 13, 1965, Msgr. Monaghan served as parochial vicar at Our Mother of Mercy chapel, Philadelphia, and also served on the faculty at Saint James Catholic High School for Boys, Chester, from 1941 through 1954. Serving furthermore at Villa Saint Joseph, Darby from 1954 through 1970, as vice rector and then rector, he served as pastor at Saint Hugh of Cluny parish, Philadelphia, for ten years. In 1980, he was appointed pastor of Saint Joseph parish, Collingdale, being named emeritus in 1990. He died at Saint Francis Center for Rehabilitation & Healthcare.
