Alma Jean (Knoppel) Cornwell, age 86, of Stockbridge, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home - Fairview Chapel at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge.

Born in Washington, D.C. on July 23, 1930 to Herman & Alma Knoppel, she was one of eight children. She attended the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Alma married John D. Cornwell, Jr., in 1950 and lived in Norfolk, VA before moving to the Atlanta area and settling in Stockbridge, GA. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she taught an adult Sunday school class, was a Certified Lay Speaker and President of Bethel's United Methodist Women's group. She wrote a weekly column for the Henry Daily Herald newspaper titled "News from Fairview" and had been a substitute teacher at Fairview Elementary School. She was employed at Wausau Insurance Companies for over 25 years at the Atlanta office in the Safety and Health Department before retiring in 1995. She had completed training to be a licensed Emergency Medical Technician and volunteered in the formative years of Henry County's Emergency services. She served on the Board of Directors of the Safety Glazing Certification Council for 17 years as a Public Interest Member. She had served on the Federal Standards group of the Consumer Safety Glazing Committee. After retirement Alma volunteered at various Henry County Charities and was active in many civic interests and community affairs. Taught her own children everyday life skills such as: the Bible with its many adventurous Bible stories, the love of the Lord with her own words & actions, how to cook the best goulash this side of the Mississippi, sew & tailor their own clothes so they would fit their own bodies, wash clothes without making them all the same color, how to make that special hard candy fudge (which is still in the process of being conquered today) the gift of singing to put a song in our day, and the piano, which we loved hearing her play day in and day out.

She is survived by children; Paul D. Cornwell of Stockbridge, Judy C. Beichley of Conifer, Colorado, Roy L. Cornwell of Kewanee, Mississippi and John Lee Cornwell of Stockbridge, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, John Douglas Cornwell Jr.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 10, 2016, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donation may be made to The Gideon's International.
