Lancelot Addison, son of Lancelot a minister of Gods word of Maulds Meaburn, Westmorland, Oxford University Alumni.
On Meaburn Hill is erected a small stone obelisk,by Thomas Bland of Reagill,on the site of the house of the paternal ancestors of Joseph Addison.His father Lancelot Addison was born here in 1632.
After receiving his early education at the grammar school of Appleby he was sent to Queen's College, Oxford - he was admitted on 24 Jan. 1650–1 as a ‘batteler.’
He proceeded B.A. 25 Jan. 1654–5, and M.A. 4 July 1657. Addison took his M.A. degree in 1693, and gained a probationary fellowship in 1697, and a fellowship in 1698.
At the Restoration he received the appointment of English chaplain at Dunkirk.
In 1662 Addison accompanied Lord Teviot as the chaplain of the new dependency of Tangier.
In 1670 Addison visited England, and married Jane, sister of the Right Rev. William Gulston, S.T.P.:
11 Jun 1670 Lancelot Addison, of Milston, co. Wilts, Clerk, Bachr, abt 34, & Jane Gouldston [i.e. Gulston], of St Clement Danes, Spr, abt 25; alleged by Francis Ashley, of St Clement Danes, Gent.; at St Clement Danes, St Mary, Savoy, or Gray's Inn Chapel.
In 1683 he was appointed dean of Lichfield, and in 1684 collated to the archdeaconry of Coventry.
Dr Lancelot Addison, Dean of Lichfield, died on 20 April, 1703, and was buried in the churchyard of Lichfield Cathedral, inside which, in 1719, a mural monument was erected to his memory.
