William was already a steamboat man on the Lower Mississippi when his brother T.P. Leathers joined him and they made their first venture with a small steamer named the Sunflower that ran on the Yazoo River until 1840. In 1829, Captains William and T.P. Leathers and their brother-in-law Captain Cassius B. Sandford began the building of the series of steamboats, the first to be named the Princess. (Myrna Myres, cites Way's Directory of River Packets 1848-1994, entry #4588, p 378)
