He Graduated from Columbia Law School. Admitted to the bar in 1871, though practiced law, was involved more in charitable organizations. He married Abian Steele Beekman (1819-1897).
Was a trustee at the New York Hospital and was a Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau by the Queen Regent of The Netherlands for the service he showed to the crew of Van Speijk, a Dutch man-of-war during a review that was held.
