Ruthellen Straine, 90 years of age, passed on Friday, August 19, 2016. Ruthellen was the last surviving child of Anna and Fred Backus. She and her siblings, Doris, Marietta, Garnett, and Wesley Backus, were born and raised in Los Angeles, Ca. She enjoyed piling in the back of her father's furniture truck and driving to Pasadena to watch the Rose Parade. This tradition inspired her great love of roses and passion for gardening.
Ruthellen married the love of her life, McKinley, in 1944. They were blessed with a beautiful and spunky daughter, Nancy, in 1945. The family moved from the Los Angeles area to the Auburn area in 1959. They enjoyed traveling to Missouri and Arkansas to visit McKinley's relatives. On one such visit, Ruthellen learned how to cook on a wood burning stove and became the master chef of biscuit and gray. A meal that continued to bless family and friends throughout the years.
Ruthellen and McKinley were active in the Colfax and Meadow Vista community. Both worked and retired locally, McKinley for the Placer County Water District and Ruthellen for Lucky's market. Their doors were always open to family, friends and strangers, offering a roof over head, hot cup of coffee or tea, and a hardy meal. After 49.5 years of marriage McKinley passed on while Ruthellen continued their tradition of caring for loved ones and welcoming all.
Ruthellen provided a stable and loving environment to her daughter Nancy and all of her grand kids, great grand kids, and great-great grand kids. She created an atmosphere of peacefulness as she modeled how to live a life of generosity, perseverance, humility, and kindness. She loved having her family over and made Christmas, Easter, and Birthdays a special tradition for all. Ruthellen is survived by her daughter Nancy; Grandchildren Terry and Jeff; Great- Grandchildren, Bruce, Krystal, David, Kara, Kathryn, and McKinley; Great-Great-Grandchildren Ethan, Travis, Isis, Baylee, and Jace. She strived to care for every generation with great love and generosity.
It is a great understatement to say that she will be missed. She was a woman who lived well, gave abundantly, and loved deeply. She has enriched the lives of all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. She has passed on a legacy of integrity, honesty, and generosity. Ruthellen, you made a dent in the universe and planet earth is forever changed because of the goodness you shared and the life you gave. Thank you for living well and paving the way for others to follow. We love you greatly and we will miss you deeply.
