EDWARD came from a long line of men whose lives were closely tied to the horse culture of their times. His grandfather PETER 1802 1880 had been a hosteler on the estate of Sir Taton Sykes, in Yorkshire England, before coming to Canada. Sir Taton had the largest racing stable in England at that time. Peter's son THOMAS 1836-1915 established a teamster business in Harriston about 1876. Thomas' son EDWARD 1863-1940, took over the teamster business and continued for many years, providing transport of goods, jitney services from the station to downtown Harriston and other tasks requiring strong horses and strong backs.
Edward was also the town of Harriston, constable.and bailiff and his son Jack worked for him.
Unfortunately the family fortunes fell on hard times as trucking and other automotive creations took over the field of transportation and the Johnson organization failed to move with the times. By the late 1930's Edward had lost his eyesight and was no longer physically or financially able to remain in his home in Harriston. His wife Mary had died in 1929.
