Mattie was the wife of William Alexander "Alex" Thompson (possibly his second wife), and the daughter of Malinda Dolman. The above date of birth is from the 1900 census, but her death certificate said she was "about 79", and the informant (her son, Okey) didn't know her date of birth. The birth year is 1847 on her 1868 marriage record and the 1850 census, is 1846 in the 1860 and 1880 censuses, and is 1848 in the 1870 census. Her name was transcribed as Susan M. Doleman on the marriage record, but she was listed as Martha S. or Mattie S. in records after 1868.

She was the child named Susan M. living with the family of John and Elizabeth Rule Dollman/Dolman in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but the way she was listed in 1850 indicates that she wasn't their daughter... she was actually their granddaughter.

In 1850, Malinda Dolman was living in Botetourt with George and Martha Waskey (indexed as Watkey)-- she was age 23, and the only Dolman in the household. She was listed as a widow in the 1900 census (age 71, born October 1828), and was living in Bath Co. with the family of her deceased niece, Nettie Virginia Brooks Thomas (wife of John P. Thomas, daughter of William Brooks and Julia Ann Dolman -- Julia was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Rule Dolman). The 1830 census for John Dollman included a male age 5-9 and 3 females under age 5, so Malinda may have been John's daughter or the wife of the male child (but no marriage record found).

Mattie and William Thompson had seven known children: Martha A., John David, Philip Anderson, Willie Dove (wife of Joseph M. Wright), Cora, Bettie Waddy (wife of Robert S. Campbell), and Okey Feazel. See William's memorial for interesting information about their middle names.

The 1880 census shows that Mattie was fairly young when William died (about 39 years old), but she never remarried, even though three of their children were age 10 or under (the youngest, Okey, was just 2-3 years old).
