Bernice L. Mitchener, 99, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016, at Crown Pointe, Hartford City.
She was born in Matthews the daughter of the late Russell and Mable (Sutton) Smiley. She attended Matthews High School and married Clarence A. “Dutch” Mitchener, on November 5, 1935, in Matthews.
Mrs. Mitchener was a lifelong resident of Matthews, until moving to Hartford City, in her later years. She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Matthews, where she formerly had been active in the United Methodist Women. She was employed as a cook for 16 years at Matthews Elementary School and she and her husband enjoyed auctions and flea markets.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia (Meredith) Conelley, Ward, AR, Bonnie Slain, Williamsburg, VA, Myla (John) Carpenter, Clever, MO; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dutch, on June 9, 1999, her brother, Calvin Smiley, and a son-in-law, Gerry Slain.
