Karel was born and raised in Amsterdam, Holland and then he immigrated to London, England. He trained as a doctor in London England where he met his future wife Euphemia Nicol, born in Nanaimo BC in 1869. She trained as a nurse at the London General Hospital. He was unable to practice due to problems with his nerves. They were married in 1896.

Stephen, born 1897 in London, was a month old when they all went to Nicaragua to start a coffee plantation near Managua along with Euphemia’s father, Charles Samuel Nicol and his wife Maria (Aspinwall) and Harriet Jessey(her grandmother). Matagalpa was where James [Jim] and Robert [Bob] were born. Karel developed a debilitating disease from which he suffered then and later while living with Euphemia’s family in Mill Valley, California. At this time, Elizabeth Joan was born in Berkley California.

Karel worked for the Californian Fruit Growers Association in 1908 as head cashier. Robert remembers that while his father Karel was ill and his mother Euphemia had baby Elizabeth to look after so his grandfather Charles Samuel Nicol took Robert to his first day of school in Mill Valley. Sadly, Karel Robert Kuypers died on the 7th of Oct and was buried Oct. 20, 1910.

After his death his oldest son Stephen had a paper route and became a naturalized citizen. Soon after his son moved to New Zealand so he could enter WWI as a British citizen although he was a US citizen already. His mother and brother moved to Seattle, Wa.
