Canton – Flora Pitts Johnson Burress, 100, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late William Pine and Bertha Guy Pitts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lawton M. Johnson and Matt V. Burress; a daughter and her husband, Shirley and Douglas Phillips; a son and his wife, Carroll and Wanda Johnson; daughter-in-law, Han Johnson; a step-son, Gene Johnson; a step-daughter, Blanche Ball; two sisters, Ruth Collette and Edna Holcombe; and a brother, Bob Pitts.

Flora was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church where she taught children's Sunday school for 50 years and was a member of the benevolence committee operating the church clothes closet. She enjoyed the mission trips to the Mountain State Fair, handing out clothes and blankets to the fair workers. She worked some holidays at the rest stops on the interstate handing out water, coffee, and tracks to the travelers who stopped for a break.

Flora was a homemaker for most of her life. At the age of 50, she went to work to work at the Canton Nursing Home. Flora worked there for 12 years as a nurse's aide and then she worked several years as a private duty caregiver. She truly loved helping and caring for others.

She is survived by a son, Charles Johnson of Hermitage, Tennessee; step-son, Edward Burress and wife, Betty, of Candler; step-daughter, Cynthia Skidmore of Canton; a brother Bill Pitts of Waynesville; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and three very special friends, Wanda Wilson, Carolyn Chapman, and Steve Warner.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be men of the church.
