1927-2016
Harmon M. "Sam" Harris, Jr., aged 89, long-time resident of Houston, Texas, passed away September 22, 2016 in Austin, Texas. He was born in Long Branch, Panola County, Texas, on May 16, 1927 and spent much of his early life in Frankston and Carthage in East Texas. Sam graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur in 1945 and immediately joined the Navy, serving with the Sea Bees on Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands from 1945-46. Sam married the love of his life, Betty Grace Chatham, in September 1950 in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1951.
Sam had a long career in engineering with Pritchard & Abbott Inc., (Houston and Austin) in industrial property valuations, and then with the Harris County Appraisal District. He was a long-time University of Houston supporter and lifetime member of the UH Alumni Association. Sam was passionate about golf and was a member of Riverbend Country Club in Sugarland for many years. He was a member of and former Acolyte Director at Saint Mark's Episcopal in Houston. After retirement, he was especially proud of his volunteer service with the M.D. Anderson Children's Art Project where he worked well into his 80's braving the vagaries of Houston public transport in the process.
Sam was preceded in death by his wife Betty, and is survived by son David Wm. Harris and wife Karen of Dripping Springs, Texas, and daughter Laura Kay Harris Lansing and husband Don of Austin. He is also survived by grandsons Trevor Harris and Connor Harris; granddaughters Jennifer Lansing Saenz and husband Bert, Brittany Lansing, Melissa Lansing Chandler and husband Daniel, Heather Lansing Lambert and husband Justin; and great-granddaughter, Sadie Lambert.
A graveside service will be held at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston, Texas on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 11am under the direction of Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas 78752.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Sam may make donations to either the Alzheimer's Association at http://alz.org/ or the Glaucoma Research Foundation at http://www.glaucoma.org/.
