ST. JOSEPH, May 27, 1855.
MESSRS. EDITORS: A gloom was cast over our city yesterday morning by announcement of the death of Dr. James Sykes. The night before he was in his usual health and spirits, and went down to the new steamer Sultan, which made its first appearance at our wharf on that day, and had invited the St. Joseph Greys to a collation.

Just after the Doctor had reached the boat, he observed some indications of an approaching storm and started for his home. On his way he was overtaken by the rain and walked very fast. After getting to his house, and whilst sitting in a chair in the parlor, in conversation with some members of his family, his head fell suddenly back and he gasped twice. There was a loud peal a thunder at the moment, and it was supposed he was struck by lightning, but his son John ran to him and found he was struck with death.

He died of an affection of the heart, just as he had predicted time and again, that he should die. It was half-past nine o'clock, Saturday night, the 25th inst. The shrieks of his family brought in the neighbors, who found him still sitting in his chair, with his head thrown back and his countenance bearing the calm and smiling appearance of pleasant slumber.

He was buried yesterday evening at 4 o'clock, in Mount Mora cemetery. His body was accompanied to the grave by the largest funeral procession that ever was seen in this city.

Dr. Sykes was a gentleman deeply learned and eminently scientific in his profession, while his free hospitality, his varied acquirements, his high spirits, and generous sentiments rendered him an ornament of the social circle. His loss will be seriously, sadly and permanently felt, and deeply lamented by our whole community. Requiescat in pace. [Rest in peace.]
