Marjie was born on July 1, 1941, in Crab Orchard, West Virginia. She is preceded in death by her parents, U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd and Erma O. Byrd, as well as by her son, Jon Michael Moore. Marjie is survived by her husband of nearly 53 years, her two children, her two grandchildren, both of Arlington, VA; her sister, three nephews, and five great-nieces and nephews.
Marjorie was a graduate of Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA, and attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in Art History. After marrying her college sweetheart, Jon, she raised three children in Vienna, Virginia, and became an active volunteer at her children’s elementary school. Marjie sponsored international children for an exchange program and was very involved in the “Meals on Wheels” program in Fairfax County, VA.
After she and her family moved to Leesburg, VA, in the 1980’s, she suffered the tragic loss of her son, Jon Michael Moore, and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City, OK, as well as in Leesburg, Va. Marjie also worked as the Trade Expo Coordinator for the Professional Housing Management Association from 1994 – 1999.
An avid animal lover, Marjie helped raise a succession of pets and recently loved to spend time with her “Miss Kitty.” The real joys of her life were her granddaughters, born in 2002 and 2004. “Oma” was a devoted grandmother who doted on her “only sunshine”, Emma, as well as her “sweetheart”, Hannah. Her absence leaves a hole in the hearts of those of us who loved her most.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Loudoun County Animal Shelter at 39820 Charles Town Pike, Mailstop #66, Waterford, VA, 20197 (https://www.loudoun.gov/animals). Checks payable to: County of Loudoun with “Animal Program Trust Fund” in the memo.
A private internment service will be held at Columbia Gardens Cemetery followed by a casual gathering at her daughter’s home in Arlington, VA, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23.
