Swede attended Peshtigo Schools and Zion Lutheran Church. Swede enlisted in the United States Army 6-12-1956 until 6-11-1958 and then in the Army Reserves for four years until 10-16-1962. He joined the United States Navy, 3-25-1965 to 2-24-1967, served on the USS Capricornus, received two medals, and then joined the United States Merchant Marines and sailed on the Great Lakes for 31 years, mostly on the “Herbert C. Jackson.” He retired to his home on the Peshtigo River and enjoyed hunting with his faithful companion “Archie”. He loved being outdoors, making different things, shopping, cooking and working in his orchard.
Swede is survived by a sister Patricia (Bob) Drees;
two special nieces: Linda and Bonnie; Bonnie’s children: Joshua, Nicole, Kristina, and his “peanut” Alisha; and many other nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Swede was preceded in death by two infant siblings: Richard and Romelinda; four sisters: Bernice Butler, Margaret “Mugs” Holmberg, Shirley Larson and Joyce Dollhoph; three brothers: Jack “Coon”, Robert “Mush”, and William “Bill”.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 28, at Berth & Rosenthal Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until time of services at 1 p.m. with Father John Harper officiating.
Immediately following burial, with military honors, will be at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Marinette.
