Dr. Elihu Vedder, Sr. was the father of the world-renowned artist Elihu Vedder, Jr., who did the engraving on his father's headstone. Elihu Jr. did among other things the murals in the Library of Congress and the illustrations in the "Rubayat of Omar Khayyam". His personal papers are now in the Smithsonian Art Archives. Elihu Sr. was also the father of Dr. Alexander Madison Vedder, the personal physician to the emperor of Japan. Elihu Sr. was a long-time dentist in Matanzas, Cuba and did quite well there until he was forced to leave by the government. In 1876, at the age of 73, Elihu started anew in St. Augustine, FL. Vedder Street in St. Augustine is named for him. His nephew, Dr. John J. Vedder, ran a museum and curiosity shop on Bay and Treasury Streets in St. Augustine. Elihu Sr. and his second wife were originally buried in the small Fairbanks Cemetery on the north side of St. Augustine, but were relocated to Evergreen in the late 1950s when they expanded US 1.
