Roman Catholic Cardinal. Casoria born Alfonso Castaldo was the third of five children born to a merchant and his wife. Receiving his early education in his native village, he entered seminary in Cerreto Sannita, moving later to those of Pozzuoli and Naples, in which city he also frequented the local university. Ordained priest there on June 8, 1913 by Msgr. Angelo Michele Iannacchino, he served as military chaplain in the Italian Army during the Great War, being successively named provost of the church of San Mauro Abbate in his native Casoria at the end of the conflict, an office he held until 1934, when on March 27 of that year, he was elected bishop of Pozzuoli by Pope Pius XI. Receiving his episcopal consecration on the following June 30, 1934 from Cardinal Alessio Ascalesi, Pope Pius XII named him assistant at the Pontifical Throne on July 16, 1949 and promoting him to the titular archbishopric see of Tessalonica, appointed him coadjutor of the archdiocese of Naples and administrator 'per vitam' of Pozzuoli on January 14, 1950 of the following year. Transferred to the metropolitan see of Naples on February 7, 1958 and named bishop 'ad personam' of Pozzuoli on the following August 5, Pope John XXIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 15, 1958 with the title of San Callisto. Giving his inheritance to charity, he founded a boys' town, a professional school for boys and girls as well as a number of artisan training centers. A great promoter of the Italian Catholic Action, Cardinal Castaldo died on Thursday, March 3, 1966, at 10.50 am., of kidney trouble, diabetes and coronary sclerosis, at Filomarino Palace, the archiepiscopal residence of the see of Naples.
