Keith & Keith Funeral Home

YAKIMA - Surrounded and served by God's loving angels on earth, Helen Severn died on September 16, 2005. She was born in Yakima, Washington on December 19, 1908 to Otto Robert Bloch and Minnie Brooks Bloch. She attended McKinley Grade School and Yakima High School, graduating in 1926. She was a member of the first class of Yakima Valley Junior College (predecessor to YVC). She was first violinist of Yakima's first Symphony Orchestra, and was also one of the first secretaries of KIT Radio Station (duties encompassing on-air broadcast of recipe favorites, among others).

In 1934, she married Dr. Charles Severn and they had three children: Margaret Jo (Peggy) Early, Kenneth Severn, and Steve Severn. She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Sewing Saints. She made many quilts for the church and lap robes for the local nursing homes. She enjoyed crafts, especially sewing. Each bride in the family received an album quilt; and family and many friends had car quilts; and the babies had baby quilts.

She was one of the organizers and first president of the Yakima Valley Dental Auxiliary after the dentists returned to Yakima from serving in WWII. She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to two clubs for over fifty years. She had a lovely garden and enjoyed her roses each day of the summer.

What she was most grateful for was that she was blessed by a loving family. She truly enjoyed every one of them. Their gatherings at the family cabin at Goose Prairie were always a joyful occasion. She is survived by her children Peggy (husband Robert Early and their family Todd and Nina Early, Jim and Teresa Early, Steve and Alice Early, and Bill Early), and Ken (wife Sylvia Severn and their family Charles and Molly Severn, Kristie Severn, Jennie and Jon Helman, Shannon and Rob Fallon, and David Severn), son Steve's daughter Stacy Klingenstein, eleven great-grandchildren (Alice and Abby; Madalyn, Victoria and Alex; Charles and Kathleen; Kelsy and McKinsey; Jaden; and, Brendan), as well as sisters Jean McCabe and Betty Hochstetter, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Charles Severn, son Steve Severn, grandson Doug Severn, and great-grandson Andrew Early.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff at the Hillcrest at Summitview, Living Care Retirement Community, for their constant and compassionate care of Helen, and to the Hospice staff who gently led the family through a difficult time. Memorial services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 12:00 noon, on Monday, September 19, 2005. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Andrew Early Guild at Children's Hospital, Seattle, to the Sewing Saints at First Presbyterian Church, or to Hospice at Memorial Hospital.
