----------
The son of Bernard & Anne Margaret (Kintzler) Aumen, he emigrated in 1844 and by 1860 was a laborer living in Germany Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg September 2, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry. Shot in the right forefinger at the battle of Fort Stedman March 25, 1865, he was admitted to Columbian U.S. Hospital, Washington DC. While listed as absent at muster-out, he in fact honorably discharged May 31, 1865, the same day as the rest of his company.

He married Agnes Elizabeth Eckenrode January 30, 1866, in Bonneauville, Adams County, and fathered John Bernard (b. 09/19/67), William Francis (b. 11/08/69), Charles Edwin (b. 01/19/71), Margaret Elizabeth (b. 08/26/72 - married a Sauenwald), Augustus Bartholomew (b. 08/24/74), Mary Agnes (b. 04/19/76), Ann Cecelia (b. 10/01/77 - married a Waltman), and Mary Agnes (b. 11/20/79). In 1890, he lived in Cumberland Township, Adams County, but died in Littlestown from "exhaustion" due to "chronic interstitial nephritis."
