Judge J W Davis is a Mississippian by birth and has been a member of the Methodist church from his early youth. In 1854 he moved with his parents to Rusk county, Texas, the next year going to Angelina county, making that his home continuously until 1859 except three years he was away serving as a soldier in the Confederate army. He was a member of Company E l[ ]th Texas Cavalry, and saw most of the service east of the Mississippi river. He endured the usual difficulties and like all other soldiers of the south saw his full share of the horrors of war, and engaged in many severe conflicts. After the war he returned to his home in Angelina county, where he was frequently called upon to serve the public in official relations. In 1868 he was made a Mason, joining [Homer] Lodge A F & A M No. 254.
He came to Brown county in 1899, locating at Blanket, and has since served the people of this county in the Texas Legislature. About two years ago he moved to Brownwood and is now engaged in business here.
