Mother, Two Babies Die in Fire in Groton
Husband Survives As Home Is Destroyed
GROTON-Two infant sisters and their 18-year-old mother died from burns suffered in a flash fire which destroyed their home early Sunday.

Mrs. Norman Whitehill died in Barre City Hospital about 9 p.m.

She suffered first and second degree burns over 80 per cent of her body in a vain attempt with her husband to rescue their babies about 3:30 a.m.

Also dead are Tina Whitehill age 2 months, who perished in the flames, and her 13-month-old sister, Marie, who ded in Barre City Hospital at 3 p.m. from first and second degree burns.

Marie was rescued from her first-floor bedroom by Kenneth Williams, 1, a neighbor. He smashed a window, entered the flaming dwelling and handed the child out to his own father Perley Williams.

Forced From House
Mrs. Whitehill had to be forced from the six-room house by her husband. Her night clothing caught fire as she fled.

Whitehill, also 18, was treated at the hospital for face, neck and hand burns and discharged.

He is a laborer in a Barre Quarry.

Groton volunteer firefighters found the house almost totally engulfed by flames.

The home was located on a side road abut a mile west of Groton Village.

An oil stove in the dining room, located between two first-floor bedrooms, is believed to have caused the fire.

Whitehill said he was asleep in one bedroom with his wife and daughter, Maria. Tina, the youngest child, was asleep in the other bedroom.

Dining Room in Flames
He said he awoke to find the dining room in flames, ran out-side and sounded his car horn in an attempt to summon help from neighbors.

When he returned the fire had spread throughout the first floor.

The car, which had been parked adjacent to the house, was destroyed by fire.
