Patricia Ann Tierney Byrne died Thursday, July 3,2014, in Delray Beach, Fla. Mrs. Bryne, 87, was the mother of New Canaan’s town director of health, Dr. David M. Reed.

Born July 23, 1926, in Greens Farms, she was the third child of Howard S. Tierney and Belle T. Tierney. She grew up happily with her brother, the late Howard S. Tierney Jr. of Fairfield, a pharmaceutical executive; and her sister, the late Gene Tierney Lee of Houston, a movie actress.

Mrs. Byrne attended Greens Farms School and Bedford School in Westport before attending St. Catherine’s School in Richmond, Va., Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, and Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Md.

Following graduation, she attended Barnard College and Finch College in New York. In October 1947, she married Elliott W. Reed of Savannah, Ga. Widowed in 1964, she married the late Donn H. Byrne; for 46 years they lived in Southport and Delray Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Byrne was a devoted mother, avid golfer, enthusiastic bridge player and frequent volunteer for community service activities, her family said. In 1962, she co-founded the Fairfield Women’s Exchange, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary; and in 1977 helped lead one of the largest consignment sale benefits for Fairfield Country Day School, which featured the sale of a saddle horse.

Besides her New Canaan son, Dr. Reed, Mrs. Byrne is survived by her other children, David M. Reed of New Canaan, town director of health, Elliott W. Reed of Fairfield, John R. Byrne of Orlando, Fla., and Peter R. Byrne of Indianapolis, Ind.; and her stepchildren, Jody Byrne of Streetsboro, Ohio, Donn H. Byrne II of Albuquerque, N.M., Suzanne S. Byrne of Santa Fe, N.M.; and her sister-in-law, Jane Tierney of Fairfield.

A memorial service were held Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at 11:30, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 651 Pequot Ave., Southport. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfield Women’s Exchange, 332 Pequot Ave., Southport, CT 06890.
