He was the son of Joh. Friedrich Waldmann and Kath. Barbara Märklin Waldmann. His birth name was Johann Waldmann as per Germany, Select Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898, but he was known as John Waldman in the District of Columbia. On July 14, 1874 as John Waldman, he married Rica Genzerodt in the District of Columbia. He is listed on the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses as John Waldman. In the District of Columbia, Select Births and Christenings, 1830-1955, he is listed as John Waldman on the records for his three sons. In the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995 for the District of Columbia he is listed as John Waldman. His marriage record, his death record and his obituary all use the name of John Waldman. It is important to respect and recognize the wishes of the individual and the family with the name by which they were known and wish to be remembered by.

John Waldman was a native of Germany and emigrated to the District of Columbia in 1865. He had conducted a tailoring business for more than 50 years. At the time of his death the business was located at 903 Fifteenth Street. He was a member of Armenius Lodge F.A.A.M., Scottish Rite, Almas Temple, Shrine and other Masonic bodies. He had been a director of the Washington Permanent Building Association for 15 years and was a former president of the German Sangerbund. He died at age 84 on Saturday, January 7, 1933 at Garfield Hospital. Survivors included two sons: William of Milwaukee and Frederick of the District. Funeral services were held at his residence, 2730 Chesapeake Street. Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery.
