Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1825 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he served in infantry postings until 1836, when he was assigned to the United States Army Quartermaster Department. He would serve as a quartermaster for the rest of his military career, and has risen to the rank of Major when the Civil War started. First assigned as Chief Quartermaster of the Army of the Mississippi, he received a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, and was placed as the Chief Quartermaster of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Depot, a supply hub that was critical to the sustainability of the western Union armies. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865, promoted to Colonel in 1866, and retired from the Army the same year.
