US Congressman from New York. He studied law and became an attorney in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. From 1827 to 1831 he was editor of a newspaper in Canajoharie. In 1832 he was elected to the US House as a Jacksonian Democrat and served one term, from 1833 to 1835. From 1836 to 1839 McVean was Montgomery County District Attorney. In 1839 he moved to New York City, where he continued to practice law. From 1844 until his death he was New York County Surrogate Judge. In September 1848 McVean was appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and he was still serving in this position at the time of his death.  (bio by: Bill McKern)
