Professional Football Player. He was the recipient of the Heisman Trophy in 1994. For four seasons (1995 to 1997 and 1999), he played at the running back position in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns. Born Rashaan Iman Salaam, the son of Harold 'Teddy' Washington, who briefly played in the NFL, Rashaan attended La Jolla Country Day School outside of San Diego and later played collegiate football at the University of Colorado. He distinguished himself, when he set a school record of 2,055 rushing yards for a single season, as he achieved All-American honors. Salaam was recipient of the Walter Camp Trophy as National Player of the Year, in addition to the Heisman Trophy in 1994. He chose to turn professional following his junior year and was selected by the Bears as the 21st overall pick during 1995 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, he topped the 1,000 rushing yardage mark and scored 10 touchdowns, as he received NFC Rookie of the Year honors for 1995. His career was cut short by knee injuries after totaling 33 regular season NFL games. After retiring from football, he became involved with the promotion of martial arts contests. He was inducted into the Colorado University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. He died suddenly at the age of forty-two.
