Danish King. Also spelled Erik V Klipping. Eric reigned 1259–1286, son of King Christopher I. Until 1264 he ruled under his mother Queen Dowager Margaret Sambiria. Between 1261 and 1262, Eric was a prisoner in Holstein following a military defeat. Afterwards, he was brought up in Brandenburg. The king's epithet refers to coins getting clipped for devaluation, an unkind reference to his lack of trustworthiness, having short-changed his people and the monarchy. He was assassinated and nine magnates were convicted of the lethal conspiracy.
