Foster -- stout, hearty and able bodied -- enlisted on June 17, 1863, for a term of six months' service. Foster was a member of the 1st Battalion, Pennsylvania Infantry, Company H. Foster and his regiment were assigned to guard duty in Harrisburg, the state capitol city of Pennsylvania. While there, he became seriously ill with chronic diarrhea. Foster was honorably discharged and came home in January 1864. Foster remained ill for nine months, including a bout with the measles, and died on Sept. 30, 1864.
