Musician, Songwriter. He will be remembered for his 1969 chart-topping single "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?". Born in India, to British parents who worked as civil servants for the British Government, Peter returned with his family back to their native England in 1954 following his father's death. Along with older brother Richard (later known as Eden Kane who had a successful career as a musician in his own right), the pair and younger brother Clive formed their own skiffle band during the late 1950s. By the mid 1960s, he made a name for himself in England and recorded the singles "In the Days of My Youth" (1967, under the name Peter Lincoln), "I Must Go On" (1968) and "I Am a Cathedral" (1968). It would be his changing direction of music style that paved the way for success, as he gravitated from a pop music sound to a more traditional folk music style. The result being the release of his self-titled, debut album in 1969 which catapulted him to stardom. The single "Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?" from the album achieved a number one placing on the British Charts and earned him a sharing of the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriting (Along with Davie Bowie for "Space Oddity") in 1969. Eventually, the hit would achieve international recognition as it earned a placing on the American Billboards Top 100 Chart (reaching number 70). Following a memorable performance on the British TV music program "Top of the Pops", Sarstedt gained wider recognition and was rewarded with his own television series which ran from 1969 until 1970. He had further success with the single "Frozen Orange Juice" (1969, which achieved a number ten placing in England). Over the next two decades, he recorded several more albums and acquired a large following in Europe which made him a popular touring attraction. He remained successful as part of a 1960s nostalgic music tour lineup during the 2000s. He died following a lengthy battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
