American Actor, Comedian and Author. Although he appeared in dozens of television shows and films, he will best be remembered for his role as Hymie the robot in the TV series 'Get Smart' from 1966 through 1968. Born Richard Gautier, he began acting in high school and after serving in the U. S. Navy during the 1950s, he moved to New York where he appeared in several comedy clubs before landing the title role in 'Bye Bye Birdie', appearing on Broadway for two years earning a Tony nomination along the way. Returning to Los Angeles, he immediately began working in TV and motion pictures appearing in such shows as 'Gidget', 'The Patty Duke Show', 'Bewitched' and 'Mr. Terrific' before landing the recurring role as Hymie on 'Get Smart'. Over the next several decades he would guest star on such TV shows as 'The Flying Nun', 'Here We Go Again', 'Love, American Style', 'Mary Tyler Moore', 'The Rockford Files', 'When Things Were Rotten', 'Marcus Welby, M.D.', 'Wonder Woman', 'The Love Boat', 'Charlie's Angels', 'Happy Days', 'Alice', 'G.I. Joe', 'Murder, She Wrote', 'Silk Stalkings', 'The Golden Palace' and 'Nip/Tuck'. Among films he appeared in were 'Ensign Pulver' (1964), 'Wild in the Sky' (1972), 'Fun With Dick and Jane' (1977), 'The Naked Truth' (1992) and 'You Animal' (2004). Gautier was also the author and illustrator of ten published books, among them 'The Art of Caricature', 'The Creative Cartoonist' and one children's book entitled 'A Child's Garden of Weirdness'.
