Major League Baseball Executive. He served as the General Manager of several Major League Baseball clubs for nearly two decades. He graduated from Florida Southern University and entered baseball in 1956 as the head of baseball operations with Burlington-Graham Pirates, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate in the Class B Carolina League. He spent 18 years in the minors before joining the Texas Rangers in 1973 as vice president. He became the club's general manager later that year and stayed with them until 1978. While with the Rangers, he put together clubs that for several years contended for the American League West division title. In 1979 he moved on to the Seattle Mariners where he served as president first and then president/general manager. During his tenure with the Mariners, he wasn't as successful and he left the team after the 1983 season. He joined the Cleveland Indians in 1986 where he was the top assistant to General Manager Hank Peters. He left the Indians in 1989 and joined the California Angels where he became the general manager after the 1991 season. He was the Angels' general manager for two seasons before being replaced by Whitey Herzog at the end of the 1993 season. He later worked for both the Arizona Fall League and USA Baseball before retiring in 2000. His son Dan Jr. also served in executive roles in Major League Baseball.
